Watching away from home

Neo Video does not include a remote-access service. If your existing VPN can reach the computer running Neo Video Server, add the appropriate address manually in Neo Video.

Neo Video cannot guarantee that playback over a VPN will work. Setup, routing, and troubleshooting for your particular VPN are outside Neo Video support — use the official documentation for your VPN or router.

Connect with your existing VPN

Tailscale or another mesh VPN

Add the server computer and viewing device to the same VPN network. In Tailscale, both devices must belong to the same tailnet.
Connect the VPN on the viewing device.
In Neo Video, choose “Add Server” and enter the server computer's VPN address. For Tailscale, use its Tailscale IP. Neo Video does not normally discover the server automatically while you are away from home.

A home VPN that already reaches your LAN

Connect the viewing device to your home VPN and confirm that it can reach devices on your home network.
In Neo Video, choose “Add Server” and enter the “Address” shown on the Neo Video Server settings page, such as 192.168.0.3.
If the address is unreachable, use the VPN's official documentation to check its routes, access rules, and firewall.

Do not expose Neo Video Server directly

Do not forward the Neo Video Server port through your router or publish it with DDNS. Neo Video Server is designed for trusted networks, and its HTTP traffic is not encrypted. A server password limits access but does not encrypt the connection. If you share the VPN with other people or devices, set a server password as an additional access control.

When it doesn't work

The VPN is connected, but the app can't reach the server

First, confirm that the server computer appears online in the VPN app and that Neo Video has the correct address. If the address is unreachable, use the VPN's official guide to check its routing, access rules, and firewall. If the address is reachable, make sure Neo Video Server is running.

Playback stutters or won't start

Remote playback depends on your home's upload speed and the route used by the VPN. If a lower-bitrate video plays normally, available bandwidth is likely the problem.
